For the amount of both mental and physical misery that varicose veins cause, there seems to be surprisingly little popular understanding of why veins become varicose and what to do when that happens. It may well be that the treatment of varicose veins isn’t “dramatic” enough to attract people’s attention in these days of heart transplants, wonder drugs, and so on. All the same, varicose veins are a problem and an important health matter to a large number of people; in fact, as many as 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men are significantly affected by them. Knowing how the condition develops is necessary if the patient is to be able to do anything to control or prevent it, and that is the subject of this pamphlet.
