The prostate gland remains small until puberty, when male hormones, particularly testosterone, cause it to enlarge. By age 20, the prostate has reached its normal size and remains unchanged until approximately age 50. Then it often begins to enlarge again. Problems affecting the prostate may occur after age 30. The prostate may become inflamed due to the presence of a bacterial infection. In men after age 50, the enlarged prostate may press on the urethra, interfering with urination. Cancer of the prostate is also common in older men. in this pamphlet I cover a a number of problems of the prostate gland, each potentially serious and deserving treatment on its own.
