When I decided to write on this important subject, I asked for title suggestions. Most of them emphasized the causes of stroke and its effects, its often tragic implications. None caught the spirit I wished to nurture better than the one I have selected-"Stroke Recovery: Hope and Help." In these pages, I hope to emphasize the practical over the theoretical, what can be done rather than what has happened, and what you, as the patient, or the patient's spouse, child, or other family member, or anyone else facing the task of rehabilitation, can do.
