Macular degeneration attacks the macula of the eye, found in the retina. The macula is that key part of the retina that allows for detailed sight in the center of the field of vision, with millions of cells that transform light into nerve signals that inform the brain what it is you are seeing. The progressive breakdown of tissues in the macula area in one or both eyes forms scars, painlessly affecting vision until virtually all sight in the central field is gone, causing legal blindness. Although age-related macular degeneration doesn't actually result in total blindness, it severely impacts the quality of life of people over the age of 60.
